How to Create Kill Team Datacards

A complete step-by-step guide to building custom Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team operative datacards with our free online generator. No downloads, no account, works entirely in your browser.

Start Creating Datacards

What Is a Kill Team Datacard?

In Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team, every operative on the battlefield is represented by a datacard. A datacard contains everything you need to play that operative during a game: their name, faction, Action Point Limit (APL), movement speed, armour save, wound count, weapon profiles, equipment, special abilities, unique actions, and faction keywords.

Official datacards come with Kill Team boxed sets and expansion books, but many players want custom datacards for homebrew operatives, narrative campaigns, converted miniatures, or simply to have cards that feature photos of their own painted models. That is exactly what the Kill Team Datacard Generator is built for.

The generator runs entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves your device. Cards auto-save to local storage, and you can export them as high-resolution PNG images, print-ready PDFs at the standard 63 × 88 mm trading card size, or shareable URL links that encode the card data directly in the address.

Step 1: Choose a Faction Template or Start with a Blank Card

When you first open the Kill Team Datacard Generator, you will see the Card Library on the left side of the screen. This is where all your datacards are listed. To get started quickly, click one of the pre-built faction templates at the top of the sidebar. Each template comes pre-loaded with realistic stats, weapons, abilities, and a faction-appropriate colour theme.

Available Kill Team Faction Templates

If your faction is not listed, or you want to create an operative from scratch, select the Blank template. This gives you an empty datacard with placeholder values that you can customise completely.

+

Click "+ New" in the Card Library to add more datacards. You can create as many operatives as you need for your full Kill Team roster. Each card is independent and can have its own faction theme, weapons, and abilities.

Step 2: Fill in Operative Details in the General Tab

The editor panel below the Card Library has multiple tabs. The General tab is where you enter the core information that appears on every Kill Team datacard. All changes appear instantly in the Live Preview on the right side of the screen.

Step 3: Upload an Operative Portrait

Switch to the Portrait tab to add an image of your miniature. A good portrait makes your datacard feel personal and professional, especially if you have photographed your own painted models.

Portrait Controls
ControlWhat It Does
Upload / Drag & DropLoad a PNG, JPG, or WebP image of your miniature. Maximum file size is 5 MB. The image is stored locally in your browser, not uploaded to any server.
Zoom Slider (1x - 3x)Zoom into the image to crop tightly on the model's face, torso, or a specific detail. The percentage is displayed next to the slider.
Drag to RepositionAfter zooming in, click and drag the portrait preview area to pan the image within the frame. Works with both mouse and touchscreen.
Reset PositionResets the zoom back to 1x and centres the image in the frame.
*

Photography tip: For the best results, take a photo of your miniature against a plain background with good lighting. Crop the image to a square (1:1) ratio before uploading. The portrait area on the datacard is roughly square, so a pre-cropped image will fill the frame cleanly without needing much adjustment.

Step 4: Add Weapons from the Library or Manually

Switch to the Weapons tab to define the operative's weapon profiles. In Kill Team, each operative typically carries one ranged weapon and one melee weapon, though some carry more. Each weapon has a standardised stat line.

WRWeapon Rules (also called Special Rules or Weapon Abilities). Comma-separated list of keywords like Range, Ceaseless, Lethal, Brutal, Rending, etc.Range 12", Ceaseless

Using the Built-in Weapons Library

The generator includes a library of over 60 weapons across 7 Kill Team factions: Space Marines, Chaos (Heretic Astartes), Death Guard, Astra Militarum, Tyranids, Orks, and Adeptus Mechanicus. Click "Add from Library" to open the weapon browser. You can filter by faction, weapon type (Ranged or Melee), and search by name. Clicking a weapon auto-fills all stat fields immediately.

+

Adding multiple weapons: Click "+ Add Weapon" to add additional rows. Most Kill Team operatives have 2-3 weapons. You can remove any weapon by clicking the delete button next to it.

Step 5: Add Equipment, Abilities, and Unique Actions

Switch to the Rules tab to fill in the three rules sections that appear below the weapons table on the datacard. These sections define what makes your operative special beyond their basic stats and weapons.

Printing Kill Team Datacard Sheets

For tournament play or organised games, most players want a full printed sheet with all their operatives on a single page. Here is how to set that up.

  1. Create all the datacards you need — one datacard per operative in your Kill Team roster.
  2. Switch to the Sheet tab in the editor. Each card in your library has a checkbox to include or exclude it from the print sheet.
  3. Set a Sheet Title at the top (for example, your team name like "Alpha Strike Force" or "Hive Fleet Leviathan").
  4. Scroll down to the Sheet Preview section to see how your cards will be arranged on an A4 page.
  5. Click Sheet PDF in the toolbar to download the PDF, then print it at 100% scale.
*

Important printing note: Cards are sized at exactly 63 × 88 mm, which is the international standard trading card size. When printing, make sure your printer is set to 100% scale or "Actual Size" — do not use "Fit to Page" or "Shrink to Fit" as this will make the cards the wrong size for standard card sleeves. Print on thick card stock (200-300 gsm) for the best feel.

Tips for Creating Great Kill Team Datacards

Auto-Save

All changes are automatically saved to your browser's local storage. Close the tab, come back tomorrow, and your datacards will still be there exactly as you left them.

Duplicate Cards

Creating multiple operatives from the same faction? Click Duplicate to copy an existing card, then change the name, weapons, and abilities. This is much faster than starting from scratch for each operative.

Import and Export JSON

Use Export JSON to save a backup of all your datacards. Use Import JSON to restore them on a different computer or browser. This is the most reliable way to transfer your cards between devices.

Share Without a Server

The Share Link feature compresses your card data and encodes it directly into the URL. No data is stored on any server. Anyone with the link can view and import the datacard. Links work forever because the data is in the URL itself.

Faction Icon as Image

In the General tab, the Faction Icon field accepts either a text character (like Ω, †, or an emoji) or an uploaded image file. Upload a small PNG or SVG of your faction's logo for a polished look.

Reset Everything

Click Reset in the toolbar to clear all datacards and return to the default state. This action cannot be undone, so make sure to export a JSON backup first if you have cards you want to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kill Team Datacards

What is a Kill Team datacard and why do I need one?

A Kill Team datacard is a quick-reference card that contains all the rules, stats, weapons, and abilities for a single operative in Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team. During a game, you refer to each operative's datacard whenever they activate, shoot, fight, or use an ability. Having well-organised datacards speeds up gameplay and reduces rulebook lookups. Custom datacards are especially useful for narrative campaigns, homebrew operatives, or players who want cards featuring photos of their own painted miniatures.

Is the Kill Team Datacard Generator free to use?

Yes, the Kill Team Datacard Generator is completely free. There is no account to create, no email to provide, and no subscription. The tool runs entirely in your web browser. Your datacard data is stored in your browser's local storage and is never sent to or stored on any external server.

What size are the printed datacards?

Datacards are generated at 63 × 88 mm, which is the standard trading card size (also known as poker card size). This is the same size as Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh cards. They fit perfectly in standard card sleeves and top-loaders. When printing, always use 100% scale — never "Fit to Page" — to ensure accurate dimensions.

Which Kill Team factions are supported?

The generator includes pre-built templates and a weapons library covering Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes), Chaos (Heretic Astartes), Death Guard, Tyranids, Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard), Orks, and Adeptus Mechanicus. However, you can create datacards for any faction by starting with a blank template and entering your own stats, weapons, and abilities. The colour theme is fully customisable to match any faction, chapter, hive fleet, sept, craftworld, or warband.

Can I use this for Kill Team 2024 (KT24)?

Yes. The datacard layout includes all the fields used in Kill Team 2024: APL, Move, Save, Wounds, weapon profiles with ATK/HIT/DMG/WR columns, equipment, abilities, unique actions with AP costs, and keywords. You can create datacards that match the KT24 format and rules structure.

How do I share datacards with other players?

There are two ways to share. First, click Share Link to generate a URL that contains your card data encoded in the address. Copy and paste this link to anyone — they click it and the card loads instantly in their browser. Second, use Export JSON to download a data file, then send it to another player who can use Import JSON to load it. Neither method requires any server or account.

Can I add photos of my own painted miniatures?

Yes. Switch to the Portrait tab and upload any image file (PNG, JPG, or WebP, up to 5 MB). Use the zoom slider to crop in on your miniature and the drag-to-reposition feature to frame the shot perfectly. The image is stored locally in your browser and embedded directly into the exported PNG or PDF.

Will my datacards be saved if I close the browser?

Yes. All changes are automatically saved to your browser's local storage as you edit. When you reopen the generator, your cards will be exactly as you left them. However, clearing your browser data or using private/incognito mode will erase local storage. For a permanent backup, use the Export JSON button to save your data to a file.
